Mission

The mission of the New Mexico Suicide Prevention Coalition
is to advocate, collaborate, educate, share resources and to plan and
implement actions to reduce suicide in New Mexico.

Practical Vision

To promote a culture of connectedness and build communities of hope by
implementing statewide suicide prevention efforts.

The Coalition collaborates with NM’s DOH Office of Violence and Injury Prevention’s Suicide Prevention Program and the NM DOH’s Office of School and Adolescent Health as well as many other individuals and state agencies in the area of suicide prevention.
The New Mexico Suicide Prevention Coalition has identified 3 Strategic Directions related to promoting mental health and preventing suicide. These are:
  • Building and Aligning Infrastructure and Resources to Support Suicide Prevention
  • Expanding Statewide Capacity to Reduce Suicide
  • Identifying and Supporting People at Highest Risk for Suicide)
The Coalition is made up of these individual workgroups which comprise individual, state agencies and groups.

“What good people can do in the face of great sorrow;
we help some time pass for those suffering.
We sit with them in their hopeless pain without
trying to fix them with platitudes: doing this with them
is just about the most gracious gift we have to offer.
We give up what we think we should be doing or what
we think we need to get done, to keep them company.
We notice the messiness, the discomfort and the
emptiness and let it be there until some light returns.”
Anne Lamott
